Light didn't die in New Black Towers. It was changed into a new, secret language. Most peoples' eyeballs couldn't read that language, but the people who lived there could. Their eyeballs had special chips in them that could unscramble New Black Towers. In that sense, they were really more like books than towers -- written in a dead language, dug up from dry soil. They could be read, if you only had a Rosetta stone to translate them. Of course, the residents could read regular light, too. Whenever I walked by, I imagined a hundred pairs of eyes staring out of that crack in the sky.
